You Are A Communicator

Let that sink in! If you sing… You’re a communicator! If you play the piano… You’re a communicator! If you play the guitar… You’re a communicator!  If you dance… You’re a communicator!

Let’s remove your instrument from the equation (voice, keys, guitar, bass, drums, brass, woodwind, auxiliary percussion, etc). Removing all of your musical inclination… At your very core I want to ask you this:

Why do you play shows?

  • What is it that you are trying to communicate?
  • Why should your audience care?

(When you have your answers, I’m going to ask you again…)

Again, why do you play shows?

  • What is it that you are trying to communicate?
  • Why should your audience care?

(This time, try to compress your answers into one or two sentences)

Here are my answers:

What is it that you are trying to communicate?

I see you, I love you, and I enjoy you -and tonight we’re all going to have a blast!

Why should your audience care?

It’s empowering, fun, and personally validating for audience members to feel seen, loved, and enjoyed. It’s empowering, fun, and personally validating for people to laugh TOGETHER, sing TOGETHER, and experience fun TOGETHER through music!  <- That’s community!

Future posts will start diving into the: "Am I doing it?" and "How Do I Do It?" questions.

If you made it this far, I want to congratulate you on establishing a vision for yourself as a musical-communicator! Question 1 can be regarded as a “vision statement”, and Question 2 can be regarded as a qualifier for your “vision statement”. After all, vision is the first step to having a distinct impact in any endeavor you decide to pursue (not just music)! Now, things are getting exciting!

Until next time,

-T.
